Our Story

Built by coaches, for people who want more from their training.

PHNX Performance Centre started with two personal trainers and one simple idea. Liverpool deserved a gym where coaching comes first, where every member is known by name, and where the space is built for serious training without the crowds.

Meet the Founders

Alex Mcgroarty-Raine, Co-Founder and Personal Trainer at PHNX Performance Centre

Alex Mcgroarty-Raine

Alex has spent five years coaching in big commercial gyms. His specialities are body composition, weight loss, obesity and diabetes management, biomechanics and injury prevention. Over those years he saw too many people lost in busy, impersonal gyms, training hard without a plan and without anyone in their corner.

Danielle Burns, Co-Founder and Personal Trainer at PHNX Performance Centre

Danielle Burns

Danielle spent 20 years as a professional dancer before becoming a personal trainer four years ago. She knows what it takes to keep a body performing at its best, year after year. She brings that discipline, movement quality and attention to detail to every client she works with.

Why PHNX?

The phoenix rises, and that's what we want for everyone who walks through our doors. Whether you're starting from scratch, coming back from injury or chasing a new personal best, PHNX is a place to rebuild, get stronger and become the best version of yourself. Our philosophy is painted on the wall:

Rise

Take the first step and commit to the goal.

Push

Put in the work, with expert coaching behind every session.

Evolve

Become stronger, fitter and more confident than you were before.

The Gym

Tucked away underneath Wildroot at 60 Old Hall Street, PHNX is a semi-private gym in the heart of Liverpool city centre. It's a two-minute walk from Moorfields station.

Every inch of it was built by the people closest to us. The whole renovation, from knocking down walls to fitting doors, was done by our friends and family. The phoenix on our wall was hand-painted by the talented Charmaine. Lots of long evenings and weekends, a fair few cups of tea, and a lot of love went into turning an empty basement into the gym you see today. When you train at PHNX, you're training in a space that a whole community helped create.

We've filled it with Gymleco, Cybex and Precor equipment, and we're always adding more. It's kept semi-private on purpose: no queues for machines, no chaos, just room to train properly.

More Than a Gym

At the bigger gyms it's easy to feel like just a membership number. You put your headphones in, train alone and leave without speaking to anyone.

PHNX is different. We know our members by name. Our coaches are on the gym floor, not hidden away, and they're always happy to check your form or talk through your training. Members spot each other, cheer each other on and celebrate each other's wins. Whether it's your first session or your hundredth, you'll be welcomed, supported and pushed to be your best.

It's the kind of gym where people come for the training and stay for the people.

The Team

Our coaches each bring something different. Dayna Watters is passionate about empowering women through strength training. Mason Nevitt brings a background in bodybuilding and powerbuilding. Together with Alex and Danielle, the team covers everything from first-time gym-goers to experienced lifters.
